James Clinton Cole, 64, has been arrested in 27-year-old Cynthia Rodgers of Forestville 1989 slaying, Prince George's County Police announced.

Cole was already serving a life sentence from an unrelated first degree rape conviction, the department said.

He was charged with first degree murder, rape first degree and several other offenses in Rodgers' death.

Rodgers was found dead in a wooded area in the 6000 block of Surrey Square Lane Service Road in Forestville on January 27, 1989, PGPD said.

Her cause of death was determined as strangulation with blunt force trauma to her head and neck, thus ruling it as a homicide.

The case was revived on January 24, 2022 and investigators linked Cole to Rodgers's death through DNA testing. However, detectives have not found any evidence that Cole and Rodgers knew each other.

A Facebook page launched to shed light on Rodgers' case has been tracking developments for years.
